CicloSDias San Diego in the Springtime

San Diego is beautiful in the Springtime and with Spring arriving quickly, let’s celebrate my favorite season with a free open-street event, CicloSDias San Diego, on Sunday March 30th! CicloSDias welcomes everyone in San Diego to walk, ride, stroll and enjoy our streets.  Approximately 2.5 miles of city streets in Pacific Beach will be opened to families, pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, skateboarders, and anyone else interested in using this public space in a new way. This is our second year of the creating a car-free neighborhood day, and we are proud to join other cities around the United States and the World.

CicloSDias shares a common message with all residents- we want a clean, healthy, and vibrant San Diego.

Ride your bike, walk, meet your fellow San Diegians and if you can, please help us keep this great event happening by volunteering, donating, or fundraising.

Cars Take a Backseat to Bikes on Fourth Bike Local Sunday

San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and Golden Hill Embrace Cycling on July 21

Golden Hill is the place to be on Sunday, July 21. The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC), an organization advocating for and protecting the rights of all people who ride bicycles, announces its fourth Bike Local Sunday in Golden Hill. In conjunction with CicloSDias Mini in Golden Hill Park, Bike Local Sunday drives local businesses with a day of bicycling fun in San Diego neighborhoods. A casual organized ride highlights the day. 

SDCBC established this monthly event to encourage any and everyone to hop on their bicycles with friends and family and support local economies in the spirit of healthy fun and liveable communities.

“We wanted to turn the focus from cars to being on two feet and two wheels in our communities. And we’ve seen outstanding response,” says Andy Hanshaw, executive director of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition. “Everyone from everyday bicycle commuters to families with young ones on tricycles come to these Bike Local Sundays.”

Golden Hill welcomes cyclists all day, and a group ride will kick the morning off (ride location TBA). The neighborhood tour will wind through the most prized areas of Golden Hill, tour CicloSDias Mini in Golden Hill Park and stop at several local businesses along the way.

In partnership with the San Diego Business Improvement District Council and the Golden Hill Business District, local companies are expected to offer specials and wheel-deals on Sunday for those who bike.

·    August 25, 2013 - Bike the Bay

BLAH & Tiger!Tiger! Raise Money for SDCBC

Our friends at Blind Lady Ale House and Tiger!Tiger! once again held a fundraiser for SDCBC during Bike Month, this time by raffling off two brand new Linus bikes. Tickets were sold all month along, with proceeds to be donated to SDCBC. Read one of the winner's story below:

"I was in my kitchen making myself dinner actually wishing that I had money to go to blind lady and get a pizza when I got the call. I was extremely excited when I found out I was practically jumping around. I wasn't really expecting to win and when I got the call it blew my mind.

My only other bike is a beach cruiser. I wanted this one because I had been looking for a new one to take with me when I go to school up in Oregon. My beach cruiser is old and wouldn't last a semester in all the rain that they get up in Oregon.

I usually ride to either get from place to place or to get my dogs some really good exercise without having to run myself or drive to a dog park. 

All I'd really like to add is a big thank you to you guys for the bike. You just took a very big ticket item off of my packing list for school :)"

Mission Hills - The Place to be on Bike Local Sunday, June 16

Car-free movement encourages folks to ride bikes to local businesses

SAN DIEGO, June 4, 2013 – The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and the San Diego Business Improvement District Council announce Mission Hills as the next Bike Local Sunday on June 16. In conjunction with the second CicloSDias Mini in Presidio Park, Bike Local Sunday encourages folks to ride bikes to local businesses and support neighborhood economies.

Bike Local Sunday rolls into Mission Hills on June 16 with family-friendly themes and specials at numerous businesses for those on bikes, including Brooklyn Girl, The Red Door, Meshuggah Shack and The Gathering. Simultaneously, CicloSDias Mini opens Presidio Park for bicycles and pedestrians to enjoy without the hassles of car traffic.

Mission Hills welcomes cylists all day, but those seeking a more organized ride should meet at 10 a.m. at the Mission Hills Bike Shop, on the corner of Front Street and 1^st Avenue, to participate in a neighborhood ride that winds through the CicloSDias Mini in Presidio Park and returns to Mission Hills Business District.

“Bike Local Sunday is an all day affair for folks to enjoy when they can,” said Andy Hanshaw, executive director of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, which advocates for and protects the rights of all people who ride bicycles. “Grab your family, friends and bicycles and roll into Mission Hill’s Bike Local Sunday at your own pace.”

This Bike Local Sunday is brought to the community by San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, San Diego Business Improvement District Council and the Mission Hills Business District, which will make Treasure Seekers local discount cards available at the Mission Hills Bike Shop.

South Park Businesses Next on Bike Local Sunday Tour

Ride South Park, head to CicloSDias Mini in Balboa Park on May 19th

SDCBC just announced South Park as the next Bike Local Sunday event, in conjunction with the City’s first CicloSDias Mini in Balboa Park. The Bicycle Coalition encourages folks to ride bikes to local businesses and support neighborhood economies.

Bike Local Sundays rolls into South Park on May 19, with free bike valet parking and 15 percent discounts at Alchemy restaurant and Progress boutique for those who ride bikes.

“Our next stop on the Bike Local Sundays tour is special because it coincides with the City’s first CicloSDias Mini in Balboa Park,” said Andy Hanshaw, executive director of the County Bicycle Coalition. “South Park’s bike friendly businesses welcome everyday cyclists and their families to ride into the neighborhood then head over to Marston Point in Balboa Park for CicloSDias Mini.”

In partnership with the San Diego Business Improvement District Council, Bike Local Sundays are for everyone to enjoy, whether their style is spandex and clip-in shoes, board shorts and flip flops or skinny jeans and heels, the events are for all to participate in everyday cycling in San Diego.

Participating in Bike Local Sundays could even translate into discounts with local businesses and vendors.

                                        

“South Park’s Alchemy restaurant and Progress boutique are kind enough to offer 15% off purchases to community members participating in Bike Local Sunday on May 19,” said Tiffany Bromfield, CEO of the Business Improvement District Council. “We’re excited these bike friendly businesses are showing their support for everyday cycling in San Diego.”

Marsha Smelkinson of the South Park Business Group added that the participating businesses are pleased that bicyclists are actively supporting their local neighborhood economies.

"The businesses of South Park are happy to host Bike Local Sunday on May 19,” said Smelkinson. “In addition to the Alchemy and Progress discounts, cyclists can expect a warm welcome along with specials and discounts at many other shops and eateries in our neighborhood."

Bike Local Sundays started with a goal to get more people riding bikes to support business in San Diego. Trends show that more people riding bikes versus driving improves community health, air quality and traffic congestion, as well as boosts business by relieving residents of the costs of owning and operating a vehicle, transferring those savings to the local economy.

CicloSDias Mini in Balboa Park will open the streets near Marston Point for pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy a walk or ride car-free. CicloSDias Minis are scheduled with Bike Local Sundays in May, June and July, ahead of CicloSDias on August 11.

More Bikes, Less Cars – Coming to San Diego Businesses

SDCBC is launching Bike Local Sundays, a monthly line-up of events encouraging folks to ride bikes to local businesses and support neighborhood economies. 

Bike Local Sundays kicks off in fabulous Hillcrest on April 21 with free bike valet parking at the Hillcrest Farmer’s Market and Earth Fair in Balboa Park.

“Our kick off will be the ultimate Earth Day experience. Bike local to pick up local produce at the Farmer’s Market, then ride over to Earth Fair for a celebration of everything green,” said Andy Hanshaw, executive director of the County Bicycle Coalition. “Forget the gasoline, we’re fueling on fresh veggies and empanadas.”

In partnership with the San Diego Business Improvement District Council, Bike Local Sundays are for everyone to enjoy, whether their style is spandex and clip-in shoes, board shorts and flip flops or skinny jeans and heels, the events are for all to participate in everyday cycling in San Diego.

“We’re working with businesses to offer deals for those who skip the drive and ride instead,” said Tiffany Bromfield, CEO of the Business Improvement District Council. “For April, the Hillcrest Farmers Market will give a Market Buck to Bike Local Sundays participants. Who wouldn’t ride their bike to the market to save a buck at their favorite booth?”

Additionally, the Hillcrest Farmers Market, managed by the Hillcrest Business Association, is working with local organizations to offer other services for April’s Bike Local Sundays.
 
"The Hillcrest Farmers Market is excited to partner with Bike Local Sundays on April 21,” said Lisa Wier from the Hillcrest Business Association. “In addition the Market Buck, we're providing a mega-deluxe bike valet with Messy Jessie’s bike shop, and a huge interactive bike safety experience with Save Moves San Diego all day long. Head to the north side of the DMV with your bike for all our biking activities."
