Bastille Day Ride this weekend July 13th

July 5th was the start of this year’s Tour de France. Sure we are not in France, eating baguettes au Brie and donning berets, watching racers. . . .racing. Well here in San Diego, we can ride to a French café and oh la la even ride French bicycles if we have them! We are planning a Bastille Day(weekend) bicycle ride up the 101 to Encinitas from Sorrento Valley to those that want to speak with a French accent and binge on pastries.

This Sunday- July 13th!

We are meeting at Cycle Quest, who have graciously offered parking, water, air and a restroom! Cycle Quest is also conveniently located across the street from the Sorrento Valley train station for riders arriving by train.

We will ride up the Rt.101 up to Darshan Bakery for fine pasteries and a coffee and we then ride back to Sorrento Valley. We should be back in time to watch some of the World Cup Final. What is more French than that? Je ne sais pas?!

Casual pace, about 13 miles each way, and one big climb each way, so come prepared with a couple gears, and a good attitude. Unlike the Tour de France, this is not a race. We should be back by noon.

(yes, we know Bastille Day is July 14th, but that is a Monday and I have to work, je suis désolé, France)

USA Today Names San Diego in Ten Best Bike-Friendly Cities

San Diego only California city recognized in national bikeability list

Yesterday USA Today released its list of the ten best cities nationwide for bicycling. San Diego was the only California city mentioned. To read the article, click here. 

According to the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, the recognition is warmly welcomed but long overdue. “San Diego is making great strides and we’ve got even more on the way to be excited about including CicloSDias, bike share and the regional bike plan,” says Executive Director Andy Hanshaw. 

Major accomplishments from the past year include: 

• Launching San Diego’s first ever open-streets celebration, CicloSDias
• SANDAG’s approval of $200-million for a regional bike plan Early Action program 
• San Diego’s first bike share program with DECOBikes unanimously approved
• Record number of Bike to Work Day participants in May, 2014

The USA Today article highlights scenic and luxurious bicycle routes in San Diego including the Silver Strand, the ride to Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma and the Pacific Coast Highway route up the coastline and through some of the county’s most beautiful beach towns.

Bike The Bay is a fun ride for people of all  levels of riding ability, and features individuals, families, corporate teams and the serious and not so serious bike rider who experience a scenic bayside ride and also enjoy their only opportunity of the year to ride over the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge. The 25-mile route passes through the cities of San Diego, Coronado, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista and National City and finishes at Embarcadero Mariana Park South with a festive celebration with food, entertainment and a New Belgium beer garden. This year’s event will take place on Sunday,  August 24th, 2014 and we hope you, your family and friends can join us!

Inaugural Gordy Shields Memorial Ride a Success!

More than 45 cyclists from all over San Diego came together at Grossmont College on Sunday, April 20, for the Inaugural Gordy Shields Memorial Ride organized by SDBC's Pat Murray and CycloVets' Darryl MacKenzie. A short convocation was offered by Pat Murray who recounted a personal story about Gordy Shields and his family. She also related that "He had a delight in everything he did and that joy transferred onto every person whose life he touched." Darryl MacKenzie then encouraged the sharing of Gordy stories during the ride and when the group stopped for lunch.
The ride departed at 8 a.m. with members of local cycling organizations, including CycloVets, of which Gordy was a member, San Diego Bicycle Club, San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, and others in attendance. The route westward encompassed Navajo Rd, Waring Rd, Zion Ave, en route to Fiesta Island, with a stop at Silver Terrace Park on Friars Rd for a group photo along the way. Continuing on Friars eventually brought the group to Fiesta Island by 9:30 for a lively long loop lap as a tribute to Gordy's time-trial prowess.
The return trip offered a pleasant lunch stop at Rubios on Mission Gorge Rd with stories and remembrances of Gordy recounted by many. Upon leaving, riders chose to go at their own pace, and there were several groups arriving back at the college at different times, approximately around noon. The 34 mile ride included a 1,200' elevation total for the round trip.
Gordy's influence continues to inspire others and bring the cycling community together. April 20 was declared "Gordy Shields Day" by former city council woman Donna Frye, for his work advocating for safe cycling in San Diego, including the Bayshore Bikeway, and the resurfacing of Fiesta Island. He would have been 96 on April 20. This year, April 20 fell on Easter, and with minimal getting the word out, there was a fine showing regardless. The turnout is only expected to increase in the coming years as it is a perfect vehicle to unite the various cycling clubs of the San Diego community by coming together to celebrate this outstanding individual with a ride in his honor.

San Diego’s Second CicloSDias Rides into Coastal Communities on March 30

CicloSDias returns to San Diego to bring people out of their cars and into the streets

Back by popular demand, the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition proudly announces its second-ever CicloSDias in the streets of Pacific Beach on Sunday, March 30. The open streets celebration gives communities a break from the stress of car traffic, promotes local business and establishes San Diego as a commuter-friendly city that embraces all forms of transportation. The Bike Coalition, an organization advocating for and protecting the rights of all people who ride bicycles, remains the event’s main sponsor and local organizer. 

On Sunday, March 30, CicloSDias invites all family members (including four-legged ones) to spend the day riding, walking, strolling and skipping though one of San Diego’s most popular destinations, Pacific Beach. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. a few miles of north Pacific Beach will become streets free of automobiles and newly transformed into a space for the community to play.

“This is a chance for all people to explore and enjoy this neighborhood as they never could before,” said Andy Hanshaw of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition. “CicloSDias represents a shift in the way we think about our streets and the possibilities outside of automobiles, especially in crowded areas abundant with local businesses like Pacific Beach.”

At the first-ever CicloSDias on August 11, 2013, over 10,000 San Diegans turned out to ride, scoot and skate in 5.2 miles of car-free streets through Golden Hill, North Park and South Park. Everything from four-person tandem bicycles to roller derby teams rolled along as street performances came to life on the sidewalks and local businesses overflowed with a surge of people shopping local.

Pacific Beach Businesses Next on Bike Local Sunday Tour

San Diego's 5th Bike Local Sunday rolls through Pacific Beach on Sunday, September 22nd

SAN DIEGO, September 10, 2013 – The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and the San Diego Business Improvement District Council announce Pacific Beach as the next Bike Local Sunday destination. The Bicycle Coalition, an organization that advocates for and protects the rights of all people who ride bicycles, encourages folks to spend this day riding bikes to local businesses with family and friends while supporting neighborhood economies.

Bike Local Sunday rolls into Pacific Beach on Sunday, September 22, kicking off with an organized neighborhood ride at 11 a.m. Bicyclists will rendezvous at Pacific Coast Bicycle (1633 Garnet Ave.) for a leisurely group ride through some of Pacific Beach’s most quaint streets- cruising from Felspar Street up Cass Street, over to Turquoise and back. The route was designed to highlight local businesses such as Chocolate Haus, Hydrangea Cove, Mr. Frosty and Luelle Boutique, which will be welcoming an influx of two-wheeled customers for the day.

“We’re excited to see bike friendly businesses showing their support for everyday cycling in San Diego,” said Andy Hanshaw, executive director of the Bicycle Coalition. “While Pacific Beach is no stranger to bicyclists, this Sunday businesses open their doors to families and friends on bikes for a day dedicated to supporting local businesses.”

Bike Local Sundays started with a goal to get more people riding bikes to support business in San Diego. Trends show that more people riding bikes versus driving improves community health, air quality and traffic congestion, as well as boosts business by relieving residents of the costs of owning and operating a vehicle, transferring those savings to the local economy.

In partnership with the San Diego Business Improvement District Council, Bike Local Sundays are a perfect way for everyone to enjoy riding local and shopping local.

The final Bike Local Sunday will take place in Ocean Beach on October 20.

CicloSDias: First-ever Celebration Joyfully Embraced by Community and Local Businesses

Premiere open streets celebration surges neighborhood businesses and inspires livable communities

The City of San Diego proudly premiered CicloSDias this Sunday, August 11, to offer the community a break from the stress of car traffic, promote local business and establish San Diego as a bicycle-friendly city with open streets celebrations.

A press conference featuring Coucilmembers Marti Emerald and David Alvarez and County Supervisor Dave Roberts kicked off the event at 10 a.m., and the 5.2-mile route of CicloSDias officially opened to all those who felt the urge to bike, walk, or dance in the car-free street. The course extended from Golden Hill through North Park and South Park to reach Cherokee Point Elementary School in City Heights, looping through popular parts of each neighborhood and including hundreds of local businesses.

“This free event gave the streets back to the people for just one day, and everyone loved it,” said Andy Hanshaw, executive director for San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC). “The local businesses were booming and grateful, participants were out riding around and running into people they knew - there was a contagious feeling of cheerfulness. The success of this event represents a shift toward a future of livable communities and shared streets.”

CicloSDias brought an estimated 10,000-15,000 friends and family members (including four-legged ones) out to spend their Sunday riding, walking, strolling and skipping though some of San Diego’s most picturesque parks, neighborhoods and districts at no cost. Local businesses saw a surge in activity as participants “shopped local.” Spontaneous bands played on the sidewalk, dancers put on performances, stores brought their products outside to sample and businesses offered specials to rejoice in all the activity of the first-ever event. 

“Surveys have shown that residents want to walk and bike more and spend less time in the car,” said Hanshaw. “CicloSDias brought people out of their homes and cars and into the streets to enjoy San Diego with neighbors. We hope to give our communities the same opportunity again next year.” 

Two more community friendly events will round out this year’s Triple Crown of bicycling events including the 6^th Annual Bike the Bay on August 25 and Tour de Fat on September 28.

Cars Take a Backseat to Bikes on Fourth Bike Local Sunday

San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and Golden Hill Embrace Cycling on July 21

Golden Hill is the place to be on Sunday, July 21. The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC), an organization advocating for and protecting the rights of all people who ride bicycles, announces its fourth Bike Local Sunday in Golden Hill. In conjunction with CicloSDias Mini in Golden Hill Park, Bike Local Sunday drives local businesses with a day of bicycling fun in San Diego neighborhoods. A casual organized ride highlights the day. 

SDCBC established this monthly event to encourage any and everyone to hop on their bicycles with friends and family and support local economies in the spirit of healthy fun and liveable communities.

“We wanted to turn the focus from cars to being on two feet and two wheels in our communities. And we’ve seen outstanding response,” says Andy Hanshaw, executive director of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition. “Everyone from everyday bicycle commuters to families with young ones on tricycles come to these Bike Local Sundays.”

Golden Hill welcomes cyclists all day, and a group ride will kick the morning off (ride location TBA). The neighborhood tour will wind through the most prized areas of Golden Hill, tour CicloSDias Mini in Golden Hill Park and stop at several local businesses along the way.

In partnership with the San Diego Business Improvement District Council and the Golden Hill Business District, local companies are expected to offer specials and wheel-deals on Sunday for those who bike.

Car-free movement encourages folks to ride bikes to local businesses

SAN DIEGO, June 4, 2013 – The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and the San Diego Business Improvement District Council announce Mission Hills as the next Bike Local Sunday on June 16. In conjunction with the second CicloSDias Mini in Presidio Park, Bike Local Sunday encourages folks to ride bikes to local businesses and support neighborhood economies.

Bike Local Sunday rolls into Mission Hills on June 16 with family-friendly themes and specials at numerous businesses for those on bikes, including Brooklyn Girl, The Red Door, Meshuggah Shack and The Gathering. Simultaneously, CicloSDias Mini opens Presidio Park for bicycles and pedestrians to enjoy without the hassles of car traffic.

Mission Hills welcomes cylists all day, but those seeking a more organized ride should meet at 10 a.m. at the Mission Hills Bike Shop, on the corner of Front Street and 1^st Avenue, to participate in a neighborhood ride that winds through the CicloSDias Mini in Presidio Park and returns to Mission Hills Business District.

“Bike Local Sunday is an all day affair for folks to enjoy when they can,” said Andy Hanshaw, executive director of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, which advocates for and protects the rights of all people who ride bicycles. “Grab your family, friends and bicycles and roll into Mission Hill’s Bike Local Sunday at your own pace.”

Ride Your Bike to Opening Day!

The East Village is once again hosting the Padres Opening Day Block Party on Tuesday April 9th.

Your San Diego County Bicycle Coalition will be there providing free bike valet service, so ride your bike and avoid the traffic and hassle of parking a car. We will keep your bike safe and secure during the block party and game!

J Street will be closed off from 6th to 10th Avenue for the Block Party where there will be live music, great food from local artisans and a Stone Brewing Beer Garden. Click here for more info about the block party. 

We will be set up from 11 AM to 6 PM (the game starts at 3:30). Just look for the SDCBC tent and racks! 

More Bikes, Less Cars – Coming to San Diego Businesses

SDCBC is launching Bike Local Sundays, a monthly line-up of events encouraging folks to ride bikes to local businesses and support neighborhood economies. 

Bike Local Sundays kicks off in fabulous Hillcrest on April 21 with free bike valet parking at the Hillcrest Farmer’s Market and Earth Fair in Balboa Park.

“Our kick off will be the ultimate Earth Day experience. Bike local to pick up local produce at the Farmer’s Market, then ride over to Earth Fair for a celebration of everything green,” said Andy Hanshaw, executive director of the County Bicycle Coalition. “Forget the gasoline, we’re fueling on fresh veggies and empanadas.”

In partnership with the San Diego Business Improvement District Council, Bike Local Sundays are for everyone to enjoy, whether their style is spandex and clip-in shoes, board shorts and flip flops or skinny jeans and heels, the events are for all to participate in everyday cycling in San Diego.

Participating in Bike Local Sundays could even translate into discounts with local businesses and vendors.

“We’re working with businesses to offer deals for those who skip the drive and ride instead,” said Tiffany Bromfield, CEO of the Business Improvement District Council. “For April, the Hillcrest Farmers Market will give a Market Buck to Bike Local Sundays participants. Who wouldn’t ride their bike to the market to save a buck at their favorite booth?”

Additionally, the Hillcrest Farmers Market, managed by the Hillcrest Business Association, is working with local organizations to offer other services for April’s Bike Local Sundays.
 
"The Hillcrest Farmers Market is excited to partner with Bike Local Sundays on April 21,” said Lisa Wier from the Hillcrest Business Association. “In addition the Market Buck, we're providing a mega-deluxe bike valet with Messy Jessie’s bike shop, and a huge interactive bike safety experience with Save Moves San Diego all day long. Head to the north side of the DMV with your bike for all our biking activities."

Women Riding Self-Contained…A Rare Species?

Have you tried bicycle touring? San Diego is along the most popular Adventure Cycling Association route- the Pacific Coast trail. This post comes from Nicole Blouin who is part of a group called the Two Wheel Travelers, a women's bike touring group who has done this route before. We at SDCBC are excited to hear about more and more women cyclists taking on touring! Read her experience with touring below and let us know if you have a story to share!

Recently a woman from UT emailed me about riding self-contained with our informal group, Two Wheel Travelers, and said she thought that “we were a rare species.” I’m finding that while this might be true, our numbers are on the increase with very little risk of extinction. All newbies, one weekend and an incredible amount of high points. Claudia, who loves travel, found out how easy it is to go right out the back door. Clare loves to ride-sleep-eat-repeat, so having her days be all about this was amazing. Denise discovered she can do consecutive days, and Monday morning surprised her with bike withdrawal. Murchie expressed how it’s different than a day ride…more relaxing, no rush and nowhere to be.

“It’s hard to find other women who can leave the hair dryer and makeup at home and get dirty” (Patty in NY). So, we just need a way to connect and roll on. “I have all the gear and a finely honed sense of adventure” (Carrie in NM). So, we just need to organize the rides and they’ll come. “Sounds good, but what does self-contained mean?” (Jean in TX). O.k., so some of our species might need a little education before taking flight.

If you are passionate about cycling, there’s nothing better than a new road every day. Many women don’t consider that their bicycle can take them beyond a day, or they think of it as epic, and not simply pedaling off with a rack pack and credit card. It can be done anywhere, on any bike, for any length of time, with any amount of gear or lack thereof.

Mayor Filner Announces First Ever Open Streets Event in San Diego

This morning, Mayor Filner and the City of San Diego made a very exciting announcement. San Diego will host its first ever open streets event in August 2013! Called CicloSDias, this free, open street event encourages people to walk, ride, stroll and enjoy San Diego in a way they never have. CicloSDias San Diego celebrates our communities coming together for an unforgettable day of physical activity and fun!

Easy Biking to the Farmers Insurance Open

Planning on going to the Farmers Insurance Open at the end of the month? Try taking your bike to the tournament and save money, enjoy the outdoors, and get great parking at the event. The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition will be providing FREE bike valet parking for the golf tournament in Torrey Pines from January 23-27^th.

Valet bike parking is like a coat check for bicycles, ensuring that bicycles and their accessories will not be stolen while at the event. Farmers Insurance is also generously donating $10 to SDCBC for every bike we park to go towards our efforts to make bicycling better in San Diego County!

Enjoy a mostly car-free trip down the Highway 56 bike path from points east. Take El Camino Real north before heading west on Carmel Valley Road. Enjoy a loop around Penasquitos Lagoon before making the climb up to Torrey Pines.

From Downtown, Old Town, Mission Bay Park

Take Pacific highway to West Mission Bay Drive, Enjoy the view of Mission Bay as you work your way all the way up past Grand and Garnet to Damon/Santa Fe Drive, or take the Rose Creek bike path to Damon. Follow Santa Fe until it turns it ends at the Rose Canyon Path. Continue on to Gilman Drive for a slow climb through the UCSD Campus. Continue through campus to North Torrey Pines Road and head towards the golf course.

From La Jolla/Bird Rock

The La Jolla Bike path is a hidden gem for coastal San Diegans. Pick it up at the end of La Jolla Hermosa Ave and take it all the way to La Jolla High School. Take Fay towards the village and work your way down Torrey pines to La Jolla Shores. Stop along the climb to enjoy views of the ocean as your work towards UCSD's campus. Head north along Torrey Pines Rd until you find some world class golf.

Notes from the Board Chair

Thank you to everyone who came to our Holiday Joyride. The weather worked out perfectly for a dry and fun ride through some of San Diego's older neighborhood. Our brightly lit bicycles brought some joy to the streets, but I was especially joyous to report all the great things we have accomplished in 2012 back at Mission Brewery.

In 2012, we adopted a new strategic plan with a mission to advocate for and protect the rights of ALL people who ride bicycles. We helped launch a bike friendly business district campaign and locate three new bike corrals in San Diego.  We attended dozens of committee meetings, city council hearings, and other meetings to advocate for more bike safety measures and a more accessible regional network. We taught hundreds of adults and children safe cycling skills through our education efforts and we parked thousands of bikes through our bicycle valet program. We had the most successful Bike The Bay and Tour De Fat yet - raising funds to support for our work.

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner and Council President Todd Gloria both expressed their support for bicycles as a way to enhance the livability of our neighborhoods and the sustainability of the region. The time is right to make sure the bicycles stay at the top of the local agenda. In 2013 we will continue to work with local bicycle advisory committees to push to bicycle  improvements and make sure that bicycles are included in planning projects. We will support the implementation of a bike share program and more bicycle friend business. We will continue to provide bike education and offer valet services at large events.

Your membership helps provide a voice for cyclists in the region. As we seek to better advocate for all people who ride bikes, we can use your support as volunteers for programs like bike education and making, as well as members on our education, advocacy and organizational development committees. Watch you email boxes for more opportunities to get involved.
